Greater Auckland: Our Top 5 Waterfalls

Julie Crean (Editor) - Saturday, June 05, 2010

There is something about the humble waterfall that gets me every time.  It didn't take a team of engineers to design it, a construction company to build it, nor a team of councillors to argue over whose rates should cover its maintenance.

Waterfalls make me smile. I'm in awe of the amount of rainfall that manages to continuously flow down the mountain tops and creeks, bubbling from undergrounds springs and make their way down stream beds, to bring such awesome displays.

So with much joy ("joy" sounds a bit odd but right now I can't find another appropriate word) I can proudly share what I reckon are the Top 5 waterfalls in Auckland.

Free to visit, guaranteed wicked photography for those inclined, a good leg stretch and fresh air, and perfect in winter months....yes, because of the rainfall....da da dahhhhhhh:

1.  GO WEST:   Head extreme west coast to Karekare (south of Piha) for a fabulous beach and easy access waterfalls.  Just a little walk (literally three minutes from the roadside), will see you at the Karekare Falls.

2.  WAITAKERE WONDER:
A nice work out (not so recommended for families with under 5s, or those with sore knees) would be the Fairy Falls in the Waitakere Ranges - lots of variety (hills and stream crossings) on well formed tracks.
3.  GO BUSH: The Mokoroa Falls, close to Goldies Bush in the Bethells Beach vicinity, are certainly worth the walk too,  Another nice walk through bush, to a great waterfall display.
4.  CITY SPLASH:  For a flat family walk to an inner city waterfall try Oakley Creek in Avondale, a welcomed surprise where you'd least expect it.

5.  SOUTHERN SUDS:
The Hunua Ranges are a beautiful part of South Auckland (bordering Waikato) that tends to get overlooked.  Another lovely drive and easy stroll, takes you to the Hunua Falls.

.....and, because I personally think this is a mint waterfall (not in Auckland, but a pleasant drive away) bonus #6 is:

6.  WAIPU WINNER:  Piroa Falls are worth a short walk from the road side, with awesome swimming holes to relax in!
By no means is this the full list of waterfalls in Auckland, there are indeed plenty. We thought that each of those chosen above however, brought something new to the fold - whether it be location, size, or intensity.

We certainly would recommend this pilgrimage any weather.  Go exploring!
