Details: Whether this is your final destination, or a diversion– the Karekare Falls is a beautiful waterfall and well worth a look. It won’t be the only waterfall you see either, as there are a series of cascades as they head to the beach. The Karekare Falls are only a few minutes walk from the road side. Head down Karekare Road until you get to the 2nd car park by the beach, then head via foot over the small bridge where you’ll see the track to the Karekare Waterfall to your left. You’ll see it from the roadside, but only 3-5 minute walk will get you close up and personal. While you are there, head over the sand dunes to the black sands of Karekare Beach. It's the "wild West Coast", great for scavenger hunts after a big westerly – and great to sweep the cobwebs away. Offering excellent surfing (for those that know what they are doing) and swimmers are advised to swim between the flags (surf club operating during summer). Another walk (which takes you to the beach anyway) is the Pohutukawa Glade Walk. It takes 20 minutes (signposted) and takes you north along the beach and returns via the Karekare Stream back to the car. There are no shops, no public transport – enjoy the wild west. We Reckon | A top spot to take out-of-town visitors. A really beautiful scenic drive (and if the weather is bad, just enjoy it for the scenery) with a rugged West Coast feel - such a contrast to Auckland's white sand beaches of the East Coast. Made our list of Top 5 Waterfalls in Auckland. And, just for the record --- the photo above is after heavy rain when it flooded the picnic area beneath (so it's not a lake if you're wondering). You Reckon | It's far easier to get to the falls from Karekare Road. Lone Pine is torturous and overly long --- Cameron Getting to the Karekare Falls | See our map for directions: View Things to do in Auckland in a larger map Photo Credit | Karekare Falls, Karekare, Waitakere
